CA(SA) & AGA(SA)

Explaining the SAICA route

Welcome to the ultimate launchpad for your finance career at Newtons Chartered Accountants! If you have your sights set on becoming a Chartered Accountant [CA(SA)] or an Associated General Accountant [AGA(SA)], we are here to pull back the curtain on how SAICA articles actually work. Forget the stereotype of boring, stuffy accountants — at Newtons, we stay fresh, stay ahead of business trends, and treat our clerks like a dynamic family.

Here is how you can level up from a student to a fully qualified financial leader with us:

Choose your route: CA(SA) vs. AGA(SA)

We know everyone’s career timeline looks different, which is why we offer two premium pathways to get your foot in the door:

The CA(SA) ultimate route. This is the traditional heavyweight champion path. To cross the finish line as a Chartered Accountant, the official SAICA framework requires you to:

  • Obtain an accredited BCom Accounting degree from a recognised university.
  • Conquer the Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA).
  • Complete a training contract with an approved SAICA training office (like Newtons!) for between 3 and 5 years.
  • Smash Part I and Part II of the Qualifying Exams (ITC and APC) set by SAICA.

The AGA(SA) accelerator route. Love the operational, hands-on side of accounting? We also offer AGA articles for students who hold an accredited undergraduate accounting degree. This route sharpens your practical skills, gives you a highly respected SAICA designation, and focuses on making an immediate real-world impact in business.

The big secret: you don’t need a degree to start!

Yes, you read that correctly! You do not need to have completed your degree to start your articles at Newtons. If you are currently studying part-time or online, you can step straight into the professional ring. As long as you are actively registered for an accredited degree within the SAICA framework, our doors are open to you.

  • Earn while you learn: Get a head start on your 5-year training contract while finishing your studies.
  • Textbook to real life: See the exact concepts you are studying at night play out on real client files during the day.
  • Ample study leave: We don’t just expect results; we support them. We provide generous study leave to ensure you have the time and space to pass your exams and build your dream career.

Why do your articles at Newtons?

We have been an integral part of the auditing profession in Bloemfontein for over 100 years, but we are far from old-fashioned. Our office environment is professional, crisp and polished, but we pride ourselves on a deep culture of care — both for our clients and our clerks. You will get deep, hands-on experience in auditing and accounting, direct mentorship from practising partners, and a team that celebrates your academic and personal wins.

Professional Accountant (SA)

Explaining the SAIPA route

Welcome to the ultimate launchpad for your business accounting career at Newtons Chartered Accountants! If your goal is to lead businesses from the front as a Professional Accountant (SA), you are in the right place. At Newtons, we break the stereotype of the boring, isolated accountant. We are a dynamic, collaborative team that treats our clerks like family, giving you a front-row seat to the real-world strategy behind the numbers.

Here is how you can level up from a student into a highly skilled, strategic financial partner through SAIPA:

The SAIPA route: becoming a Professional Accountant (SA)

The South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) is the perfect pathway for those who want to dive deep into tax, financial accounting and business advisory. To cross the finish line and earn your designation, the official SAIPA framework requires you to:

  • Obtain a SAIPA-accredited BCom degree or Advanced Diploma in Accounting from a recognised university.
  • Complete a structured 3-year training contract at an approved SAIPA training office (like Newtons!).
  • Successfully pass the SAIPA Professional Evaluation (PE) exam to officially claim your title.

Why do your SAIPA articles at Newtons?

We have been a trusted financial anchor in Bloemfontein for over 100 years, blending unmatched experience with a fresh, modern business approach. Doing your SAIPA articles here means you won’t get stuck doing repetitive data entry. You will gain deep, comprehensive exposure to independent reviews, complex tax compliance, management accounting and direct client advisory. With partner mentorship and a supportive, high-energy environment, we provide the perfect foundation to help you become the professional you have worked so hard to be.

Ready to take on the challenge? Applications for our 2027 intake are officially open, and we are looking for approximately 4 outstanding SAIPA clerks to join our team. Apply below with your CV and academic record, or email them to careers@newtons-sa.co.za.
